Jersey Business launches the Better Business Grant Initiative

Nick Scott attends launch of the Better Business Grant

Nick Scott, Partner at PKF BBA, recently attended an event hosted by Jersey Business to mark the launch of the Better Business Grant, a new initiative designed to help businesses boost productivity and efficiency.

Officially launching in March 2025, the Better Business Grant is part of the Better Business Support Package, a £20 million initiative from the Government of Jersey. The grant is designed to help businesses across all sectors invest in productivity improvements, employee training, and new opportunities to boost growth. The scheme offers funding for projects covering both 2025 and 2026, including those with monthly payment structures, such as IT system upgrades and software implementation.

What is the Better Business Grant?

With a total of £5.3 million in funding available, the Better Business Grant provides up to 50% matched funding for eligible businesses investing in improvements that enhance efficiency, workforce skills, and long-term growth.
Grant categories include:

  • Productivity Grants to help businesses invest in technology, processes, and efficiency improvements.
  • Visitor Economy Development Grants supporting projects that create new opportunities within Jersey’s visitor economy.
  • Skills Grants, funding employee training and professional development.
  • Apprenticeship Grants: £2,000 per apprentice for businesses covering their employees’ participation in approved apprenticeship schemes.

For a further breakdown of the categories, examples and background information, visit the Government’s page on the initiative here.

The Package offers minor grants of £1,000 to £5,000 for businesses that have been trading for more than six months, while major grants of £5,000 to £75,000 are available for businesses that have been operating for more than 18 months, providing valuable funding support based on the company’s trading history.

The event provided valuable insights into how businesses can access this support and maximise the benefits available. One key takeaway from is the importance of acting quickly. Funding is limited to £5.3m for both 2025 and 2026, however Deputy Kirsten Morel advised that an increase to the grant would be considered depending on the success of the scheme. Paul Murphy, CEO of Jersey Business, also confirmed that companies would be able to submit their applications before the end of March, however businesses who are interested are encouraged to check their eligibility on the Jersey Business website

Businesses interested in applying are encouraged to:

  •  Register for updates – Stay informed about the application process and deadlines.
  •  Identify key areas for investment – Use the productivity scorecard to assess where funding could have the biggest impact.
  •  Gather supporting information – Think about what inefficiencies or skills gaps in your business could be addressed with funding.

This is a great opportunity for Jersey businesses to invest in their future, improve productivity, and develop long-term growth strategies.
